Kickin Some Preschool Booty and the Binky to the Curb

Let me just say that today was a HUGE day in the Hash household.  Today was Everett's first day of "preschool" also known as Kid's Day Out at our church.  I knew it was coming.  I knew he needed it.  I knew he wouldn't give a flip that I left him alone with a room full of kids for 5 1/2 hours.  I must know my kid well because that's exactly how it went down.

Timeline of this morning's events-
7:45- Everett wakes up screaming and crying (no, this is not normal)
7:46- Mom thinks to herself, "Wonderful.  Just the right attitude to have when people meet my son for the first time".
7:50- Get the kid dressed and get his breakfast ready and proceed to dry my hair and put on somewhat of a normal looking face as I am also giving a first impression alongside of my fit-throwing child.  This is fantastic.  My hair is a disaster, my face looks like Night of the Living Dead and I am pretty sure I am not wearing waterproof mascara.
Somewhere between 8:00-8:30- My son and I yelling back and forth up the stairs.  He wanted me to come down and play.  I didn't particularly want to go out without straightening this mop I call hair so I probably said, "Just a minute Buddy, but we can't play long.  It's your first day of school".
8:35- Shoes on and out the door.  Of course we had to stop for the first annual picture on the porch with the morning sun shining directly into my two year olds eyes. (See below)

 I'm going to preschool!  Boom!

All there had to be was trains and trucks and the kid was set.
Post-school cake baking.  I must say, he's my child.  Not a bit of batter on the counter.
All and all it was a fantastic first day of school.  Neither one of us cried.  Although I did hear him asking for me as I walked around the corner.  That almost sent me over the edge, but I sucked it up.
The thing I was most worried about was his nap.  Although this kid is the biggest two and a half year old in the world, he still sleeps in a crib, not on a mat on the floor in a room full of kids.  However, I did pack his lovie, binkie and a sheet.  Turns out the teacher couldn't find it in his bag.  What the what?  Pretty sure I had that baby labeled in it's own baggie.  You know away from the baggie filled with food items and the baggie filled with extra clothes and the baggie filled with diapers, all perfectly labeled with their contents, but whatever.  Oh and the excuse?  It wasn't in his backpack.  Okay, go ahead and scroll on up to the picture of him playing with the blocks.  See that teeny tiny backpack with nothing in it?  That's his backpack.  See the GIANT red bag?  That would be where all his stuff is seeing that you can basically fit two sheets of paper in his backpack.  It's simply for looks. Anyway, turns out the little tyke slept for an hour.  Again, not the 2-3 hours he sleeps at home, but I was proud of him for doing it WITHOUT his binkie or lovie.
This brings me to his next big achievement.  We put the ole stash of binks out in the hall in a basket for the "Binkie Fairy" to pick up in exchange for some toys.  Bribery?  Yes.  Did it work?  Absofreakinglutely!  He only asked for it once and then returned to covering his toys up with blankets and performing a magic show in his crib for who knows who.  That kid.  I tell ya.  He's one in a million.  I can still hear him in his room saying, "Abracadabra, Alakazam!"

Proud of you buddy and could not love you any more!

Mom vs. Marathon: The End is Near!

See Anne.  See Anne attempt to run.  I say attempt because people, the pace of my run is that of a mall walker.  No doubt.  See Anne run the longest distance she has ever ran.  See Anne lay on the floor unable to move for an hour.
That about sums up my training run today.  Ten weeks down.  Eight to go.  So let's recap.

Where I started:
Week 1: Tuesday- 3 miles   Wednesday: 3 miles   Thursday: 3 miles   Saturday: 6 miles

Where I am:
Week 10: Tuesday: 3 miles   Wednesday: 7 miles  Thursday: 4 miles   Saturday: 15 miles

What I've learned so far...
  • Taking it week by week is extremely important.  Never, ever, ever in my life did I think I would be training for a stinking marathon.  I thought for sure marathon runners had lost their minds!  Yet, here I am.  Still trucking along.  When you first see the training schedule, it is extremely overwhelming.  I just try to take it run by run.  Week by week.  It isn't as bad that way.
  • Ice is my friend.  Seriously, today's run was just about as hard as being in labor.  Not kidding.  I think it may have even been worse (gasp!).  However, I think labor is easier for some people than others and I think running is easier for some people tan others.  My friend Heather and I have repeatedly told each other that "this body was not made for running".  Apparently mine was made for birthing people and no people I am not planning on getting preggers anytime soon.  Lay off.  I digress.  When you feel like you can move again, get some ice on those knees.  I literally crawled  up the stairs when I got home and proceeded to lay on the floor for an hour willing the pain to stop.  Once the throbbing subsided, ice time.
  • Forget about sleep.  Need to run 7-10 miles before work?  You're looking at getting up at 3:45-4:00 in the morning.   I pretty much refuse to go to bed before my two year old, so it looks like I'll be sleeping in 8 weeks.
  • Just because you are running more than you thought was humanly possible doesn't mean you can eat everything you want whenever you want.  I won't go into details on that one.  I'll just say this one is not going so well.
  • Get you some cute clothes sister!  I started by running in pretty much everything Target.  This is all good for short runs, but if you're going to be out for a few hours, you really should invest in some quality  clothes.  The shoes are a given and you should get a pro to help you with that, but when it comes to the clothes, I'm going to go ahead and say my faves are Under Armour.  I am also a fan of Nike, but I think the quality of UA is the way to go.  It doesn't hurt that one of my best friends works for them, but really, it's the best.
  • Eat a banana before you run.  Random?  Yes.  I have yet to get a side cramp since I started doing it.  You're welcome.
Stay tuned for more infinite wisdom from this wannabe runner:)
