A Lovie for My Lovie

Sooner than later it is back to school for this Mama and my little man will be headed to Nana's house. I am putting together some things to make sure he feels right at home. One of the most important items will be a lovie. He like to snuggle with something soft at nap and bedtime. Here is the lovie I made for him to have sweet dreams at Nana and Grampie's house---

Fluffy Cakes

When I found out I was pregnant, I immediately thought, "I want a little girl!!!" If anyone knows me well, they know I love little girlie things. I'm talking Mary Jane's, bows, ribbons, ruffles, dresses, high heels, the works. I even told my best friend that I was going to put her boys in blue tutus because I was so desperate to buy a big fluffy tutu.
As I got to thinking about it I knew that whether Ev was a boy or a girl, I would be blessed and there are pluses and minuses to both. When I thought about the pros of a little lady, I came up with this list-
-Lunches and movies (like my mom and I used to do all summer...every summer)
- Tutus
-Bows, flower headbands, pink, dresses, ruffles...you get the point.
- Planning a wedding and seeing my baby up there on the pedestal with her big white dress on.
- Little pink shoes
-Shopping
Do you notice a trend with this list? I sure did. Money! And a lot of it! Then I realized having a little boy who loves his mommy wouldn't be so bad. Looking back now that I have my little guy, I should have wanted a boy all along. He really does fit my personality and my budget a lot better. I also have a lot of great friends with little girls or little girls on the way so I can get my shopping fix through them.

Now that that rambling is finished, I can get to my point. I have soured high and low for cute and cool boy things like I have seen EVERYWHERE for little girls. I have pretty much nailed the clothes end with Baby Gap and Janie and Jack. I had and am still having a hard time with boy accessories. Seeing as my son rocks a faux hawk and wears Pumas, he needs to keep up his image when it comes to his burp cloths, bibs, lovies, etc.
This is where Fluffy Cakes comes in. I started making him lovies and burp cloths made with fun patterns and fluffy fabric. I found that the burp cloths from the store were either too thin or not big enough. I wanted them to be made from quality material with extra padding for little faces. From this idea I started making them for friends and family members and in the end Fluffy Cakes is born!
I received a few really cool burp cloths from friends when Ev was born and I wanted to duplicate them for a lower price. I found that buying them online was super expensive, so my goal is to make hip, fun and fluffy accessories for babies. I am starting small with burp cloths and lovies and working my way up.
If you have a friend who is having a baby or just had a little one, consider a one of a kind gift. I would be happy to make something for you.

Right now I am ordering my labels and thinking about pricing, but I am thinking $10 for burp cloths and $12 for lovies. All of them will have taggies upon request for an extra $1.

Below is a lovie I made for Everett's girlfriend Addyson. It is complete with taggies and a big red button in the corner. It's so she can hold it and think of Ev at night:0)

Ruth Chris' Sweet Potato Casserole

Every New Year's Eve my family goes out to a nice dinner to celebrate the new year. When we celebrated 2010, we went to Ruth Chris' Steakhouse. I had never been so you can imagine my 9 month pregnant self's reaction to the magnificent food (If you can't, imagine a lot of waddling and not a lot of stomach space. Oh, and I was wearing a grey sweater with a bow), more specifically the sweet potato casserole. I scoured high and low as well as tried a few different recipes and I think I have found a match! Please enjoy.

P.S. I will be taking my own pictures from now on, but this one looked yummy so I thought I would use it.

CRUST
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup flour
1 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup butter (melted)

SWEET POTATO MIXTURE
3 cups mashed sweet potatoes
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs (well beaten)
1/2 cup butter, melted (1/2 cup)

Directions
Combine brown sugar, flour, nuts and butter in mixing bowl. Set aside.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine sweet potatoes, sugar, salt, vanilla, eggs and butter in a mixing bowl in the order listed. Mix thoroughly.
Pour mixture into buttered baking dish.
Sprinkle the surface of the sweet potato mixture evenly with the crust mixture.
Bake for 30 minutes. Allow to set at least 30 minutes before serving.

***Note- The restaurant serves their casserole in a 2-3 serving casserole. I used 4 sweet potatoes, doubled the crust ingredients and baked it in a 9x13 baking dish. I also added a little extra brown sugar because I love the crust!

I Know What You Did This Summer...

With Mama going back to work within a few short days, I think to myself, "What the heck happened?" Taking care of the little boy has changed a few things about my summer vacay. However, I have to say that even though I am definitely the most tired I have ever been, this has been the best summer of my life! Below you will see how this summer differs from my usual relaxation in the sun---

I no longer sit at Tanners with friends and "do walk-throughs" to scope out who is there. I now scope out, well, goats.
Instead of setting my friends up with cute boys, I set my son up with his future wife!
Long gone are the days of pedicures while I quietly read my trash magazine. You are looking at the closest thing I have seen to a salon in 4 months!
What pool hotties? Now I have a little pool cutie! Laying out in the sun, reading a good book and perhaps taking a nap has been replaced with swim lessons and Walmart baby pools.
Grant will get mad if I don't include him and call him a pool hottie...There you go buddy.
